For Transcendence I have created a series of tall, life-sized, iconic, elliptical mixed media constructions that explore the theme of transcendence and transition – mystic journeys and rites of passage.
Over the past 30 years, my work has evolved from flat, pieced, wall quilts concerned with interrelationships of colour and geometric patterning, to 3D mixed media constructions concerned with creating form and structure as a vehicle for surface design and containment.

Chan’s celebrated minimalist sculptures comprise humble materials, including toothpicks, cloth, cinnamon sticks and plastic bags. His new body of work is inspired by the shape and beauty of ethnic artifacts. Buddhism, as always, seems a predominant influence. Indeed, Chan touts his art practice as a means by which to make the mundane, even the supposedly dead and artificial, transcendent; in his hands, a stick from a forsythia plant emerging from a bottle, with a blob of oil paint attached, becomes a precious symbol of hope.
