Chan’s celebrated minimalist sculptures comprise humble materials, including toothpicks, cloth, cinnamon sticks and plastic bags. His new body of work is inspired by the shape and beauty of ethnic artifacts. Buddhism, as always, seems a predominant influence. Indeed, Chan touts his art practice as a means by which to make the mundane, even the supposedly dead and artificial, transcendent; in his hands, a stick from a forsythia plant emerging from a bottle, with a blob of oil paint attached, becomes a precious symbol of hope.
